Women Zone 5 AfroBasket Re-Cap

The South Sudan Senior Women's National team completed the Women's AfroBasket 2023, Zone 5 competition on Sunday without qualifying but with valuable lessons learned.

Following a week of battle and back to back games against Egypt, Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya in Kampala, Uganda - this is the second tournament appearance since the team's debut in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2021.

What was Achieved

In addition to representing the country, the squad earned its first-ever victory against Rwanda with 54-40 points and an exceptional effort by player Nyamouch Teny, who contributed 18 points to the win.

In games against Egypt and Uganda, captain Adut Bulgak and player Rose Akon had double-double rebounds, while the youngest player on the team, Perina Leime, finished the 3rd place game against Kenya with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

The Takeaway

The women's national team is in its early stages of formation. The goal is to participate, represent, and continue to grow in order to achieve consistent victories in the future.

The players have reiterated their commitment to the team and to continue developing their individual skill, and talents, with the promise that they will collectively work towards ushering in a new era of women's basketball in South Sudan and around the world.

We want to thank all the players, staff and incredible fans for a much needed tournament for our Women. We will back even stronger!
